I have yet to read Sigil as I want to read the whole run from beginning to end, so I am awaiting a few issues to enable that. In the mean-time I have dipped into a few of the CrossGen books and all have been enjoyable.
I picked out S: US because I anticipated a self-contained story that I would have passing familiarity with (I admit to having read Sigil #1, although not the rest of the series, and all of Negation except the final issue). The Saurian adaptation trait was something I knew about from Negation, so no surprises there.
What was refreshing was that when the story opened I assumed that this was to be CrossGen's take on Enemy Mine. I was pleasantly surprised that the story was probably more Enemy Ace than Enemy Mine. In all a story mixing politics, strange war-time alliances, horror undertones and a sympathetic treatment of a 'default enemy' soldier that was enjoyable. In all this two-parter helps showcase that even in a minor story the CrossGen universe offered richness beyond the super-heroic standards of the medium. |
